Athletic Fields

Huron Consulting Company is helping schools "Go Green" by replacing their overused, dusty grass fields with synthetic turf.

Standard grass athletic fields consume thousands of gallons of water and often require the use of fertilizers that contain nitrogen, phosphates, pesticides, and other insect-control treatments. These additives can become discharged to runoff water and streams, disrupting the natural balance of the environment. Synthetic turf athletic fields, on the other hand, use an environmentally sensitive design that reduces contamination, degradation, and maintenance while retaining appearance and functionality.

Synthetic turf fields use Low-Impact Development and Best Management Practices for stormwater management. An underground filtration system assists in groundwater recharge.

Huron replaced five acres of fields, utilizing infiltration trenches in lieu of structural stormwater facilities. In addition to saving St. Andrew's significant construction costs, the maintenance of this stormwater system will be significantly less than a traditional system.

As part of the renovations and rebuilding of the school, Huron performed stormwater infiltration testing so that the subgrade of the field could be used for infiltration and treatment of the water quality volume. Final approval was obtained from the City in one month.
