In Focus: Sustainability
Montgomery County is becoming a leader in the use of smart environmental practices in growth and development:

• This month, the Department of Permitting Services received praise from MDE for the continued success of its sediment and erosion control program.

• The Environmental Sustainable Policy promotes the use of renewable sources of energy and seeks to achieve LEED certification for County facilities.

• The Manual for Planning, Design and Construction of Sustainable Buildings, which provides
design guidelines for architects and engineers, received a NACO achievement award.

• The Sustainability Working Group, established in 2008, comprises government and business representatives and residents who developed a Sustainability Action Plan that identifies policies and programs for promoting green infrastructure and smart growth.

• The Department of Parks requires low impact development for the majority of its new projects. Huron Consulting is working on two of these projects, Laytonia Recreational Park and Kemp Mill Urban Park..

VAMC Expansion in DC is Underway
Huron Consulting is providing site design services for two expansion projects at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Washington, DC. Surgical Suite/Emergency Department/Decontamination Facility Huron is teaming with Global Engineering Solutions and Oudens Knoop Knoop + Sachs Architects for the design of an approximately 5,500-square-foot, two-story expansion to the main hospital building which will be comprised of an operating room, emergency department and decontamination facility.

Porous Concrete is a Sustainable Alternative to Asphalt
More municipalities are replacing their parking lots with porous concrete, a safe and sustainable alternative to asphalt pavement.

Porous, or pervious, concrete literally absorbs stormwater, eliminating the need for traditional stormwater management devices such as detention ponds, swales, curb and piping.

In addition to meeting EPA’s stormwater regulations for Best Management Practices, porous concrete is safer than traditional asphalt because it maintains traction when it gets wet and prevents black ice from forming on the concrete.
